Steve Kilbey (The Church) Ambient / Alternative / Experimental

Songwriter, singer, musician, artist - Steve Kilbey has etched a unique and rarified niche for himself. Above all else he is credible - lending a genuine artistry to all of his endeavours. His recording career stretches back twenty three years - he has toured the world, had hit singles and lived the rock'n'roll dream. Yet all this he does in his own inimitable style, never bending to what the perceived mainstream public may want - he maintains his unique vision and more importantly - his integrity. Karmic Hit is lucky enough to have access to much of his solo work - with more to be re-released from his amazing back catalogue as we can get to them. However, it is his new work which truly excites us. His voice and lyrics have never been better and, as always, he is never afraid to go out on a limb to pick a new and exotic musical fruit. The great thing is, if you have just come to him now - you have so much incredible music to discover!

Saffron Tribal Style Bellydance Trio

Saffron are a trio performing tribal style bellydance, which is a colourful and lively fusion of styles with origins in the traditional gypsy dances of East India, the Middle East, North Africa and Flamenco dance. The elaborate costumes are a blend of traditional items from these areas – flamenco inspired skirts, Indian cholis, pantaloons, tassels, bright and earthy colours, traditional jewellery, embroidery, mirrors and coins. The music they dance to is either live: Arabic and African drums, hurdy-gurdy, didgeridoo; or selected recorded pieces using these instruments and other eastern/traditional ones, electronica, flamenco, and more. The dancing itself is improvised yet synchronized, the dancers connecting and flowing just as birds fly and change direction swiftly and in unison. There are fast exciting pieces, during which the dancers play finger cymbals; and, in contrast, slow hypnotic pieces; as well as sword dance and veils.

Introduction to Tribal Style bellydance WORKSHOP (1hr), run by Violet
Drama Room

The workshop includes description and origins of this style, the basic concepts, learn a couple of moves and how a troupe interacts. The eventual goal for Tribal Style dancers is for the group to connect and tune in with each other's movements, in a similar way to how birds fly and change direction swiftly without colliding or going off course. Once the initial tribal language has been learned, it is a beautiful and joyous experience, it is also a meditation for women, a time to connect with the goddess energy and for each dancer to experience their contribution as valuable and accepted and equal to all others.
